Every October, Coach Appreciation Month gives us a chance to pause and honor the individuals who dedicate their time, energy and heart to shaping the next generation through sports. For those of us in parks and recreation, it’s a reminder of the profound role coaches play in the lives of young people and in the communities we serve.
Youth sports coaches are more than instructors of the game. They are mentors, role models and often the first to show a child the power of teamwork, perseverance and self-belief. A single encouraging word from a coach can boost confidence, while a thoughtful practice plan can plant the seeds of lifelong physical activity and wellness.
The lessons kids take away from sports often have little to do with wins and losses. They remember the coach who believed in them, the team that made them feel like they belonged, and the moments when they grew stronger not just as athletes, but as people. Yet we also know these outcomes don’t happen by accident. Research shows that the quality of coaching is the single greatest factor in shaping whether youth sports experiences are positive or negative.
One trained coach can positively impact hundreds of young lives over the course of their service. That’s why it’s critical to equip every coach, whether a seasoned professional or a first-time volunteer parent, with the training, tools and confidence to succeed. To help meet this need, NRPA created the Level Up: Coaching Resource Hub.
The Level Up: Coaching Resource Hub is a collection of evidence-based courses, guides and tools designed specifically for park and recreation professionals and their volunteer coaches. Covering topics from youth development and healing-centered practices to coaching girls and ensuring safety, the hub offers practical, accessible resources to help anyone working with young athletes create spaces of belonging, growth and lifelong confidence.
During Coach Appreciation Month, let’s extend our gratitude to every coach who has stepped onto the field, court or track with a commitment to young people. Their efforts often go unnoticed, but their impact lasts a lifetime. As professionals, we have the privilege and responsibility to champion them, providing the recognition and resources they need to thrive.
Together, we can create stronger programs, better experiences and brighter futures for every child who puts on a jersey.
